Alabama Crimson Tide 2009 Season
Under coach Nick Saban, the Alabama Crimson Tide were the talk of the 2008 college football season. It looked like the upstart squad might finish undefeated and head to the national championship. Unfortunately, that never panned out for the club, and then they got embarrassed in their bowl game against Utah. Heading into 2009, Alabama was looking to regroup and make another push for an undefeated season and another championship. As the middle of the season approaches, all signs are positive and the Tide looks right on track.
Things didn't start easy for Alabama. Most teams open up their seasons with an easy opponent, however Alabama was slated to pay top 10 rated Virginia Tech. Alabama put the demons to rest from their previous season's ending, and beat Virginia Tech 34-24 to springboard themselves into the top of all of the polls.
On September 26 they met Arkansas at home, and dismantled the team 35-7. In fact, through all five games of the season thus far, Alabama really hasn't had a close call. Their lowest point total of the year was 34 points, and the most they gave up was 24, both in the same game against Virginia Tech. More typical scores were the 53-7 over North Texas and the 35-7 over Arkansas.
However, even after a big start to the season like that, nothing is guarantee in the tough SEC. on October 10 they play their first big road game of the season, against Mississippi. Alabama has the edge in the match-up, but Ole Miss is a talented group of players that when focused can play as well as anybody in the nation.
The following three weeks feature three home games from the Alabama Crimson Tide. The way these games play out will have a huge bearing on their bowl game aspirations. First is a match-up against the improved South Carolina squad led by Steve Spurrier on October 17th. The next week Tennessee and new coach Lane Kiffin come to town looking to make a statement.
Then on November 7th, Alabama will take on LSU, currently undefeated and ranked in the top 5 nationally. If both teams are still undefeated heading into that match, it could be a de-facto play-in game for the national championship. If the teams aren't undefeated, then the winner will have a big chance to get themselves back into the picture.
Finally, the season will end in a road game against rival Auburn. As mentioned, things aren't easy in the SEC, and the second half of the Alabama schedule will be tough. Still, they certainly have the potential to go undefeated. LSU has to come to Tuscaloosa to play, as does South Carolina. Therefore, Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide just may complete their goal this season. They have a swarming defense and a strong offense led by the great offensive line. It just might be enough to get the job done, even in a tough 2009 SEC.
