Cry-Baby has been a sensation since it first came to light and every time it comes to stage, the show’s popularity rises even more. Deriving its central idea from Grease, Cry-Baby has given the all time favorite musical a make-over and made it even more admirable than before.
Cry-Baby is a musical based on the 1990 John Waters movie of the same name. The music is written by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger and the book is by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The show premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego on November 18, 2007 and ran through December 16. A Broadway production of Cry-Baby will began previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 15, 2008, with an opening on April 24.
Directed by Mark Brokaw with choreography by Rob Ashford, Cry-Baby is the second of Waters’ films to be adapted for the stage as a musical comedy, the first being Hairspray.
Synopsis
Treading the lines of Grease, Cry-Baby details the story of Wade Walker, Baltimore’s resident greaser/Drape, and his gang. Walker is the Cry-Baby and his group consists of disfigured Hatchet-Face Malnorowski, pregnant sister Pepper, Hatchet’s boyfriend Milton Hackett and sexually-active Wanda Woodward. They are feared by all Baltimore residents. One day after school, after getting an intense polio vaccine, Cry-Baby falls in love with Allison Vernon-Williams, a pretty but simple/Square girl, equally in love with him. Allison’s grandmother and boyfriend Baldwin are disgusted by this and try to keep them away.
How Wade and Allison manage to bring the Drapes and Squares together forms the plot of Cry-Baby.
Cry-Baby, the film
Cry-Baby was released in April 1990 and was essentially a parody teen musicals such as Grease, of Elvis Presley movies and of 1950s ‘juvenile delinquent’ movies. Johnny Depp played the lead, a 1950s teen rebel Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker.
Cry-Baby did not achieve high audience numbers in its initial release but has subsequently become a cult movie.

When it comes to fast and competitive events, the Free Kick Masters has carved a special place for itself. Tagged one of the most exciting sporting events of contemporary times, the Free Kick Masters is exactly what the name suggests – a competition to determine who is the best free kicker in the world. Although the event has been held only once, it is one of the most anticipated sporting events ever and the world is now waiting for the 2008 Free Kick Masters.
The Free Kick Masters is a skills-based international association soccer competition featuring some of the world’s top rated free kick takers competing against some of the world’s top rated goalkeepers in a direct free kick shootout to declare the world’s ‘Free Kick Master’ and ‘Golden Goalkeeper’. The competition has no affiliation with or ties to FIFA but is unique in the world of soccer as it is one of the only events that features star players involved in a direct competition against one and another.
The first Free Kick Masters was first held in Marbella, Spain over a two-day period in December 2004. Developed by a team of individuals involved in international soccer, the event challenged the skills of participants by testing their accuracy and ability to make successful free kicks from distances of 18 meters, 21 meters and 25 meters. Participants were allowed to choose their approach: from the left, right or center, and were awarded points based on the number of attempts required to score a goal.
At the end of the competition, SC Heerenveen player Ugur Yildirim emerged as a surprise standout with near perfection, having amassed 25 points en route to claiming the title.
After the success of the Event in 2004, the organizers did not conduct an event in either 2005 or 2006 due to scheduling and entertainer conflicts. Even the 2007 competition scheduled for December 22 was postponed due to player and scheduling conflicts.
2008 Free Kick Masters
After a gap of 4 years, the Free Kick Master will be held in 2008. The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 5 and the venue is Reliant Stadium in Houston. One of the highlights of the 2008 Free Kick Masters competition will be the participation of Zinedine Zidane, who will come out of retirement to compete against the impressive lineup of international sports stars.

The 2008 Dodge Challenger 500

Widespread Panic have been the most touring bands of all times. Living up to this image of theirs and to make fans dance to their tunes once again, Widespread Panic are touring the nation complete with their ever popular music, melodies and much more. An amazingly talented southern jam band from Athens, Georgia, Widespread Panic never fail to woo fans and sell-out their shows.
The current lineup of the band includes guitarist/ singer John Bell, bassist Dave Schools, drummer Todd Nance, percussionist Sunny Ortiz, keyboardist JoJo Hermann and guitarist Jimmy Herring. The band has played as many as 250 shows a year and have ranked among the top 50 grossing touring acts for eight years running, doing so without substantial radio airplay, television exposure or promotion.
Widespread Panic holds sellout records at - Red Rocks Amphitheatre (23 shows), Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (17 shows), Philips Arena (17 straight sold-out shows) and UNO Lakefront Arena (18 shows).
No two shows are similar!
Known for never playing the same show twice, Widespread Panic has a show-to-show ritual of choosing the night’s set-list. At the beginning of each tour Garrie Vereen, a member of the band’s road crew, makes a master list of all the songs the band performs and laminates it. Each night before the show, he marks the last 3 nights’ set lists in different colors. The band can see what has been played recently and then decide what songs to play during the first set. They return back to the list during set-break to pick songs for the second set, and likewise, return after the second set for any additional sets if playing more than two.
Some Widespread Panic trivia
- The band’s first performance as Widespread Panic took place on February 24, 1985 at the A-Frame house on Weymanda Court in Athens.
- Their debut LP, ‘Space Wrangler’, established a small fan-base and inaugurated several years of constant touring.
- In 2002, the band received gold certification for their concert DVD ‘Live at Oak Mountain’. It also headlined two nights of the first annual Bonnaroo Music Festival which drew a crowd upwards of 70,000 people.

According to Penn and Teller’s home page, they call themselves “a couple of eccentric guys who have learned how to do a few cool things”. The dynamic duo first joined hands in 1975 and have since developed into show business’s leading acts. Their shows are one of the most demanded and watched performances in the theater industry, although Penn and Teller have also been making successful appearances on television.
Since their first gig together, the artists have combined Teller’s silent, occasionally creepy, magic with Penn’s clown college education and juggling expertise, the two have created an entertainment success story that went from the streets to small clubs to national theater tours, and now to a current, multi-year engagement at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Penn and Teller are Las Vegas headliners whose act is an amalgam of illusion and comedy. Penn Jillette is a raconteur and Teller generally uses mime while performing, although his voice can occasionally be heard throughout their performance. They specialize in gory tricks, exposing quacks and frauds, performing clever pranks and have become associated with Las Vegas, atheism, scientific skepticism and libertarianism.
Some Penn and Teller trivia
- Penn and Teller have written three best-selling books - ‘Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends’, ‘How to Play with Your Food’ and ‘How to Play in Traffic’.
- Although the duo performs numerous well-known tricks, the most loved is their signature ‘flag restoration’ trick. They make a U.S. flag seem to disappear by wrapping it in a copy of the United States Bill of Rights, and apparently setting the flag on fire, so that “the flag is gone but the Bill of Rights remains”. In the end, the flag comes out unscratched.
- Movie appearances by Penn and Teller include ‘Penn & Teller’s Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends’, ‘Penn & Teller’s Invisible Thread for Showtime’ and ‘Michael Moore Hates America’.
- In September, Penn and Teller will celebrate their fifth year as headliners in their own theater at the Rio All-suite Hotel & Casino.
