The winner, declared Conference Champion, receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA mens basketball tournament.
The first ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament
The inaugural ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament was held at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh in March 1954. A total of 39,200 fans attended the tournament which was a sellout. The game matched Wake Forest and N.C. State. Wake Field won and Dickie Hemric was named player of the year. In all, the league grossed $70,252 in revenue that first year.
Since then, the game has been played every year and has, over the years, become one of the most popular and successful NCAA basketball games.

- Contrary to popular belief, the ACC basketball champion has not always been ‘officially’ declared in the Tournament.
- There have been 30 overtimes in the 45 years of the ACC Tournament. North Carolina has the most overtime victories with eight.
