If you think NASCAR is cool, Daytona 500, a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, is super-duper cool. It is the first and most exciting race of the NEXTEL Cup racing season, the race where everyone is on equal footing and has the same hope of taking home the Cup. Daytona 500 is like the Super Bowl of car racing.

Daytona 500 tickets
Daytona 500, one of four races on the Cup schedule, is widely regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, carrying by far the largest purse. Championship points awarded are equal to that of any other NEXTEL Cup race. Since 1995, U.S. television ratings for the Daytona 500 have been the highest for any auto race of the year, surpassing the traditional leader, the Indianapolis 500.

With roots dating back to the earliest days of motor racing, the Daytona 500 is not just America’s most popular automobile race, it is an American institution. No other race is as widely followed by stock car racing fans, and no driver’s record is fully complete without a 500 victory. The first Daytona 500 was raced on February 22, 1959 and was won by Richard Petty. In 1979, the Daytona 500 became the first NASCAR race to be nationally televised from start to finish.

The Daytona 500 trophy

The Harley J. Earl Trophy is presented to the winner of the Daytona 500. It is named after the influential automobile designer Harley Earl, who served as the second commissioner of NASCAR and designed the Firebird I prototype that adorns the trophy. The permanent trophy is housed at the Museum of Daytona. It stands about four feet tall and five feet wide. Since 1998, winners of the Daytona 500 have been presented with a miniature replica of the Harley J. Earl Trophy, which was recreated by John Liba, a sculptor from Nebraska.

2008 Daytona 500

The 2008 Daytona 500 will mark the 50th running of The Great American Race and is scheduled to be run on Sunday, February 17, 2008, celebrating the Golden Anniversary of the first race. The Harley J. Earl Trophy will be plated in gold instead of silver to commemorate this event. The race is scheduled to be the first Daytona 500 run using NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow, which was introduced in 2007, and will become standard as of 2008.
