The Food City 500 is a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup stock car race held at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. It was the first venue of the 2007 NASCAR schedule to host the Car of Tomorrow. The Food City 500 is raced for a distance of 267 miles covering 500 laps.
The first Food City 500
The very first Food City 500 was held on October 22, 1961 and covered a distance of 250 miles. It was known as the Southeastern 500 then. Joe Weatherly managed to win the said race and get NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Award the same year. NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver Award is the one given to the favorite NASCAR driver from the fans’ point of view. Weatherly took home a purse of $3,680.
The race was a success right from its inception and as the years went by, the popularity of the Food City 500 kept growing.

An overview of the 2007 Food City 500
The 2007 Food City 500 was the fifth race of the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season and was run on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The race was historic as this marked the competitive debut of NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow vehicle template. Jeff Gordon won the pole and a prize money of $173,400. Dale Jarrett, who had used a provisional the past four races, qualified 30th.
