2008 Mens Final Four
The NCAA Men’s Final Four has developed into an enormous media and fan event befitting its championship status. Final Four events have drawn thousands of NCAA basketball fans which has made Final Four one of the most important college basketball sports.

The term Final Four refers to the last four teams remaining in the playoff tournament. These are the champions of the tournament’s four regional brackets and the only teams remaining on the tournament’s final weekend.

Origin of the Final Four

Although there are discrepancies about the beginning of the Mens Final Four, the NCAA says Final Four was originated by a Cleveland Plain Dealer sportswriter, Ed Chay, in a 1975 article that appeared in the Official Collegiate Basketball Guide. The article stated that Marquette University “was one of the final four” in the 1974 tournament. The NCAA started capitalizing the term in 1978 and turning it into a trademark several years later.

A controversial first match

The first Final Four tournament, in which the Oregon Ducks defeated Olsen’s Ohio State team, nearly led to a dangerous act of civil disobedience. The town of Dalles, Oregon wanted to honor its hometown hero, John Dick who was most responsible for Oregon’s championship. When the rail line refused to stop at Dalles for the celebration, the citizens of the town threatened to barricade the path of the train.

Bowing to public pressure, the president of the line allowed the town 10 minutes to present Dick with a gold watch. Nearly 3,000 people came to the station at 5 A.M. for the ceremony.
