The Pros Come Together in the MLB Home Run Derby

Baseball is synonymous with thrill and excitement for everyone. Could there be anything more pulse racing than watching the MLB giants battle on the diamond? There certainly is - the MLB Home Run Derby. 10 players, 3 rounds, the winner takes it all. It is 2 hours of anticipation and display of sheer baseball skills.

MLB Home Run Derby tickets
The Home Run Derby is an event played prior to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. It is a contest among the top home run hitters in Major League Baseball to determine who can hit the most home runs. The event is currently sponsored by State Farm Insurance. Former sponsors included Century 21 Real Estate and Service Merchandise.

Participants

10 baseball players participate in the Home Run Derby - 5 top All-Star team members in home run standings for American League and 5 top All-Star team members in home run standings for National League. Major League Baseball makes a $1,000 donation in each player’s name to the charity of the player’s choice in appreciation for his participation.

Rules

There are three rounds in the game. In the first round, each player gets 10 outs per at bat. The top 4 advance to the second round in which each player gets 10 outs per at bat again and the top two advance to level three. Each player gets 5 outs per at bar and the winner is declared accordingly. An out is registered when a player swings at a pitch and does not hit a home run. A ball hit over the fence must be fair to count as a home run. Since a home run does not count as an out, an infinite number of home runs is possible.

Championship tie-breaker

If the 2 finalists hit the same number of home runs in round 3, the Home Run Derby goes into extra innings. Players hit in the same order they did in round 3 and hit as many home runs as they can before reaching their third out.

If the two finalists hit the same number of home runs in the extra innings, the Home Run Derby goes into the ‘Home Run Derby Showdown’. Players hit in the same order they did in the extra innings. Each player gets 1 swing. If one player hits a home run and the other makes an out, the player who hits the home run is the Champion. If they both make an out or both hit a home run, the process will be repeated until one player hits a home run and the other makes an out.
