The NFL Pro Bowl - A Friendly Match

The Super Bowl has been one of the most watched sporting events, but it has a strong contender in the form of the Pro Bowl. Lately people have started enjoying the Pro Bowl more than the NFL games and even more than the Super Bowl. The reason for this is the fact that the focus is solely on playing and not on competition. The popularity of the Pro Bowl is unquestionable and growing with every passing season.

The Pro Bowl is the all-star game of the NFL. It is played at the end of the season after the Super Bowl, the league championship game. Since NFL’s merger with the rival AFL in 1970, it has been officially called the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl, matching players in the American Football Conference against those in the National Football Conference.

The game has been played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, since January 1980. Players are voted into the Pro Bowl by the coaches, the players themselves and the fans. Each group’s ballots count for one third of the votes. The fans vote online at the NFL’s official site.

The first Pro Bowl game was played on January 15, 1939 at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, California. It was called the ‘Pro All-Star Game’ then and was won by the New York Giants. After the 1970, it has gradually became the NFL Pro Bowl as we know it today.

The Pro Bowl’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is given to the best Pro Bowl athlete. It was first presented in 1951. From 1957 through 1971, two awards were presented, to a back and a lineman, and in 1972 there were awards for an offensive player and a defensive player. Since 1973, there has been a single MVP award.

The best thing about the Pro Bowl is its attitude. As the results have no effect on the player standings or the NFL results, the focus is all on the game. It is a friendly match which teaches the world a thing or two about playing the game sans the ‘win at all costs’ attitude.
