2008 Pocono 500 - The Best that NASCAR has to Offer

The Pocono 500 is considered to be one of the most competitive races of the NASCAR Cup series and for all the right reasons. Raced on the difficult and rugged Pocono Raceway, the Pocono 500 brings the best racers together to put forward an event full of fun and excitement which knows no speed limits! Screeching in on June 8, 2008, is the 2008 Pocono 500 which promises to be bigger and better than before. The first Pocono 500 was raced in 1982 and it has since become a legendary race and an important member of the NASCAR family.

2008 Pocono 500
The Pocono 500 is the first of two stock car races held at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, on the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule in mid-June, the other being the Pennsylvania 500. The Pocono 500 replaced a 400-mile race at Texas World Speedway on NASCAR’s schedule beginning with the 1982 season. Both the Pocono 500 and Pennsylvania 500 are unique in that they have no title sponsor, a decision made by track management in response to feedback from fans. Neither race has had a title sponsor since 1996.

The Pocono 500 covers a distance of 500 miles in 200 laps.

Pocono Raceway

One of the major reasons for Pocono 500’s ever increasing popularity is its raceway - the Pocono Raceway. Pocono Raceway in eastern Pennsylvania is unique on the NASCAR circuit as it’s the only track that is distinctly triangular in shape. Its three corners each have a different radius and banking angle, which complicates things for drivers and chassis tuners alike. Since opening its gates to NASCAR in 1974, Pocono has played host to a number of different races, including the Purolator 500, the Coca-Cola 500, the Summer 500 and the Genuine Draft 500. Since 1997, however, it has hosted the same two races - the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500.
