Gatorade and NFL Join Hands to Prevent Heat Illnesses

In order to do their bit for the welfare of mankind, they have allied with Gatorade to launch the annual ‘Beat the Heat’ Campaign. All 32 NFL teams will participate in this safety operation to help boost awareness and raise charitable funds. The drive is aimed at educating parents and football coaches about the importance of hydration in order to keep the athletes safe and on the field during the annual summer sessions.
The operation has come around just as the NFL and schools across the country prepare for two-a-day pre-season practices. The NFL and Gatorade Training Camp program includes donation days, youth clinics and a national media campaign. Gatorade says that the campaign aims at teaching players and coaches the tools they need to protect themselves from heat illnesses.
Recent research conducted by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute revealed that approximately 70% of high school football players show up to practices significantly dehydrated. Further research indicated that a simple hydration strategy could dramatically reduce this incidence of pre-practice dehydration and lower the risk for heat illness.
As a part of this effort, Gatorade will strive at raising fund money to further the awareness and educational efforts of the Kendrick Fincher Memorial Foundation (KFMF). KFMF was founded by Mike and Rhonda Fincher in the memory of their son Kendrick, who succumbed to complications from a heat stroke during the summer of 1995.
Heat illnesses are highly dangerous and must be taken seriously at all levels. The good news is that these situations can be prevented if coaches and players know some simple techniques – preparation, proper hydration and the ability to recognize the early signs of dehydration or a heat stroke.
