It features music and lyrics written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, with a book by Marsha Norman.
Synopsis
Divided into 2 Acts, The Color Purple is set in rural Georgia, 1909. Celie, 14 years old and pregnant for the second time, is playing a clapping game with her beloved sister Nettie. Her father gives her baby ‘to God’ (as he had given her previous one). After a few years, she is traded for a cow and sent away to look after Mister’s children. As life progresses, Celie and Nettie are separated and never hear from each other.
Celie eventually gains control of her life, over comes hardships and is finally reunited with her children and Nettie. Things change and even Mister, a lecherous and greedy man, helps Celie in leading a better and happier life.
