The Ultimate Fighting Championship Games 2007

The Only Rule is - There are No Rules
The Ultimate Fighting Championship series, otherwise known as UFC, is a series of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) events designed to discover the world’s best fighters, regardless of their discipline. Like all other sports, the UFC has certain rules but you can’t be sure that they will be followed (except for certain very strict ones). An Ultimate Fighting Championship fight is not for the faint of heart and has been described by some as ‘human cockfighting’.
The rise of the UFC empire

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Conceived in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was inspired by a Brazilian form of MMA known as ‘Vale Tudo’ (anything goes). The UFC organization brought MMA to the United States. The goal was to find the ‘Ultimate Fighting Champion’ with a concept to have a tournament of the best athletes skilled in the various disciplines of all martial arts, including karate, jiu-jitsu, boxing, kick-boxing, grappling, wrestling, sumo and other combat sports. The winner of the tournament would be crowned the champion.

After initial protests and some changes, the UFC started gaining popularity. Today, the sport is undergoing a remarkable surge in popularity, along with heightened media coverage.

UFC rounds

Every round in the UFC competition is five minutes in duration. Title matches have five rounds and non-title matches have three rounds. There is a one minute rest period between rounds.

Judging criteria

The 10-point must system is in effect for all UFC fights. Three judges score each round and the winner of each receives 10 points, the loser 9 points or less. If the round is even, both fighters receive 10 points. In New Jersey, the fewest points a fighter can receive is 7 and in other states, by custom, no fighter receives less than 8 points.

UFC match conduct

  • The referee has the right to stop the fighters and stand them up if they reach a stalemate on the ground after a verbal warning.
  • If the referee pauses the match, it is resumed with the fighters in the position they were before.
  • Any grabbing of the cage will result in a verbal warning, followed by an attempt by the referee to release the grab. If that attempt fails, the referee may charge a foul.
  • Early UFC events disregarded ‘trash-talking’ during matches. Under unified rules, antics are permitted before events to add to excitement and allow fighters to express themselves but abusive language during combat is strictly prohibited.
