2008 3M Performance 400 to be Raced on August 17!
3M Performance 400 is one of the most competitive and exciting NASCAR races and its latest edition is only a few weeks away. The preparations are on in full swing and the Michigan International Speedway is all set to host one of the most prestigious NASCAR races – the 2008 3M Performance 400.
3M Performance 400 the second NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car race held at the Michigan International Speedway. Introduced in 1969 as a 600 mile race, the event has since been held as a 400 mile race. In 1973, the race was not held when new owner Roger Penske decided to replace it with an IndyCar race.
For 2007, the 3M Performance 400 was renamed when 3M and Post-it transferred their sponsorship from the Citizens Bank 400 to the GFS Marketplace 400.
The race is run for 200 laps.
The first 3M Performance 400
The race was first run on August 17, 1969. The car was a ‘69 Ford and the prize purse was $21,950. Known as the Yankee 600 back then, the inaugural event covered a distance of 330 miles.
The very first 3M Performance 400 was won by David Pearson, who, in 1998, was named one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers.
An overview of the 2007 3M Performance 400
The 2007 3M Performance 400 was scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 19. However, a day-long rain postponed the race until August 20, but another rainstorm postponed that run until the following day. Finally, on August 21, the race began at 10 A.M. local time. Kurt Busch, driving a Dodge Charger, took his second win in three races. As with his earlier victory at Pocono, Busch led the most laps, 96 out of 203.
