The Baseball All-Star Game was first held as a part of the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago. Its onset is attributed to the then sports editor for ‘The Chicago Tribune’ - Arch Ward. Initially, the MLB All-Star Game was intended to be a one-time event but its great success resulted in making the game an annual one. Ward’s contribution to the Baseball world was recognized by MLB in 1962 with the creation of the ‘Arch Ward Trophy’ which is given to the All-Star Game’s most valuable player each year.
The All-Star Game usually occurs in early to mid-July and marks the symbolic halfway point in the MLB season. Since 2003, the pennant winner of the league winning the All-Star Game has been awarded home field advantage for the upcoming World Series.
The Game rules call for each team to consist of 32 players. Currently, the players are selected through fan voting, player voting and manager selection.
The Home Run Derby, a contest among the sport’s top home run hitters, is played on the day before the All-Star Game.
