The 2008 Indy 500 is Only a Few Days Away!

On Sunday, May 25, the Indianapolis 500 will be raced for the 92nd time. With the big day just around the corner, fans are preparing to witness one of the biggest races on the IndyCar schedule and cheer their favorite racers on.

The 2008 Indy 500 will be the thirteenth race sanctioned by the Indy Racing League and will serve as the showcase event of the 2008 IndyCar Series in DIRECTV HD season. IndyCar Series practice began May 4. Time trials will take place over the two weekends prior to the race. The final practice, as well as the Firestone Freedom 100, will be held Friday, May 23.

• The purse for this year’s Indy 500 will be increased substantially from previous records. Under a new league revenue sharing program, the winner of the 2008 Indy 500 will receive an estimated $2.5 million, while the entire race purse will total at least $13.4 million.
• Two-time Indianapolis 500 and Formula One champion Emerson Fittipaldi will drive the Chevrolet Corvette pace car.
• Peak motor oil will sponsor the $100,000 pole position award.
• The 92nd Indianapolis 500 will be televised in the United States on ABC, the 44th consecutive year on the network.
• The race will be broadcast on the radio by the IMS Radio Network for the 56th consecutive year.
• The official entry list was released April 11. The initial list features 39 cars and 32 drivers. Additional drivers will be announced during practice and qualifying.

2008 Indy 500

The traditional Indianapolis 500 will be raced on May 25. As always the venue will be the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. It will mark the 63rd consecutive year of uninterrupted occurrence of the Indy 500.
