Fans were promised an exciting and competitive race and the results weren’t disappointing at all. People across the world watched history being made as one of the most anticipated races on the 2008 NASCAR schedule was run.
The Dodge Challenger 500 is a NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car race held at the Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. One of NASCAR’s newest additions, the Dodge Challenger 500 is run for 501 miles and 367 laps. The 2007 race was to be run on May 12, but was postponed one day due to rain.
Raced for the first time as the Rebel 300 in 1957 as a 300 mile (483 km) race in the Convertible Division, the Dodge Challenger 500 was an instant favorite of the fans. Fireball Roberts one of the pioneering race car drivers of NASCAR won the inaugural event.

- In 2005, by order of the Ferko lawsuit, the track’s other event, the popular Mountain Dew Southern 500, was removed from the NASCAR Nextel Cup schedule.
- The 2005 race was reduced to 370 laps/505.42 miles due to green-white-checker finish rule.
- Previous names of the race include Mall.com 400, Carolina Dodge Dealers 400, Dodge Charger 500 and, the most recent, Dodge Challenger 500.
- The 1979 and 2003 races have been tagged the most exciting and memorable by fans.
- The 2005 race broke two NASCAR traditions by being the only race held at Darlington that year and by running the race on Mother’s Day weekend.
The 2008 Dodge Challenger 500
Raced on Saturday, May 10 at the Darlington Raceway, the 2008 Dodge Challenger 500, the eleventh race on the NASCAR Sprint Cup season, was the first race on the newly repaved 1.366 mile track. The race also served as the last chance to qualify for 2008 Sprint All-Star Race XXIV to be held the following week at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.
The 2008 Dodge Challenger 500 was televised in the USA on Fox starting at 7 PM US EDT with radio being handled on MRN on terrestrial radio and Sirius Satellite Radio.
Greg Biffle won the pole, breaking Ward Burton’s long standing pole speed by 5.6 mph. Kyle Busch was the winner of the race. Johnny Sauter and Jeff Green failed to qualify for the race.
