2008 NHL All-Star Game - A Celebration Like No Other!
To be played on January 27, the 2008 NHL All-Star Game will be the culmination of a variety of sports, entertainment and charitable activities, including the NHL YoungStars and NHL SuperSkills events on Tuesday.
The NHL All-Star Game is an exhibition hockey game that traditionally marks the midway point of the NHL’s regular season, with many of the league’s star players playing against each other. The starting lineup for the two teams, including the starting goaltender, is voted on by fans, while the remainder of the teams’ rosters are chosen by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department in consultation with the teams’ General Managers.
The coaches for the two All-Star Game teams are typically the head coaches of the teams that, at the time of the All-Star Game roster announcements, are leading their respective conferences in point percentage.
Some NHL All-Star Game history
The first NHL All-Star Game, although an unofficial one, was held in 1934 to benefit Ace Bailey of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had suffered a skull fracture that nearly took his life. Toronto beat a team of All-Stars from the other NHL teams. The game got the status of an official event in 1947. It was originally a pre-season game between the defending Stanley Cup champions and an All Star team of players from the league’s other five teams. For two years, 1951 and 1952, the first team all stars played the second team all stars, but in 1953 the game went back to its original format.
Following the NBA’s lead, the NHL added skills competition in 1990. After experimenting with some other forms, the NHL All-Star Game adopted the traditional East vs. West format and has been played this way ever since.
