April 30, 2008 – 12:40 amGolf has been a grand sport ever since its inception. Owing to the large amount of money spent and its wide spread popularity, this royal sport has attained the status of a luxurious game which attracts the biggest names in the world. The Ryder Cup is known as golf’s grandest tournament, and for all the right reasons. To win the Ryder Cup is of paramount importance to every player.
The 2008 Ryder Cup is on its way and it will pit the best golfers from around the world. The competition will be tougher than ever before and the prizes will be bigger than ever before.
The Ryder Cup matches are essentially played between teams from Europe and the United States. They are jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour. The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 of a team representing American professionals against a similar one representing the British PGA, with the first competition taking place in 1927. Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, repeated US dominance led to a decision to extend the representation of the British & Irish team to Europe in 1979.
The Ryder Cup matches are played every two years.

This was the first time Europe had achieved three successive victories. Swedish rookie Henrik Stenson made the winning putt, just moments after Luke Donald had sunk a putt to ensure Europe retained the trophy.
