Scott Dixon is the 2008 Indy 500 Champion!

On May 25, the 2008 Indy 500 was raced. This was the 92nd Indianapolis 500 and was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Scott Dixon of New Zealand sat on the pole and won the race. It was the eleventh Indy 500 sanctioned by the Indy Racing League and served as the showcase event of the 2008 IndyCar Series in DIRECTV HD season.

IndyCar Series practice began May 4. Time trials took place over the two weekends prior to the race (May 10–11 and 17–18). The final practice was held Friday, May 23.

  • The purse for this year’s Indy 500 was increased substantially from previous records. Under a new league revenue sharing program, the winner of the 2008 Indy 500 received an estimated $2.5 million, while the entire race purse will total at least $13.4 million.
  • Two-time Indianapolis 500 and Formula One champion Emerson Fittipaldi drove the Chevrolet Corvette pace car.
  • Peak motor oil sponsored the $100,000 pole position award.
  • The 92nd Indianapolis 500 was televised in the United States on ABC, the 44th consecutive year on the network.
  • The race was broadcast on the radio by the IMS Radio Network for the 56th consecutive year.
  • The official entry list was released April 11. The initial list featured 39 cars and 32 drivers. Additional drivers were be announced during practice and qualifying.

Julianne Hough, who partnered with two-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves to win Dancing with the Stars, sang the national anthem. Jim Nabors returned to sing “Back Home Again in Indiana” after an illness prevented him from doing so in 2007. 1992 Winter Olympics women’s figure skating gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi, the season six winner of Dancing with the Stars, served as the honorary starter and waved the green flag.
