2008 Longhorn Championship Rodeo - Bigger, Better and Messier than Ever Before!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Rodeo is all about guts and grit, and all this reaches a fevered pitch at the Longhorn Championship Rodeo. A rodeo event showcasing the best that the sport has to offer, the Longhorn Championship Rodeo features 7 sanctioned events including bareback bronc riding and barrel riding. Some of the best cowboys and cowgirls come together in this ultimate challenge and only the truly brave last till the end!

The roots of the Longhorn Championship Rodeo can be traced back to 1964 when a young Jack Lynn wanted to try his hand at riding bucking horses on his parents small farm. As his, and the neighbors’ interest grew, the small arena that Jack has erected began gathering crowds on the weekends, and Mooney, who had cowboyed on ranches in the Northwest, seized the opportunity. Thus started a rodeo journey which was not to end anytime soon.

Today, the Longhorn World Championship Rodeo is among the pacesetters in a rapidly expanding and popular entertainment and sports business.

Some Longhorn Championship Rodeo events

  • Bareback Bronc Riding - involves a rodeo participant riding on a horse that attempts to throw or buck off the rider. Originally based on the necessary horse breaking skills of a working cowboy, the event is now a highly stylized competition that utilizes horses that often are specially bred for strength, agility, and bucking ability.
  • Steer Wrestling - a rodeo event where the rider jumps off his horse onto a steer and ‘wrestles’ it to the ground by grabbing it by the horns. This is probably the single most physically dangerous event in rodeo for the cowboy.
  • Saddle Bronc Riding - the rider uses a specialized saddle with free swinging stirrups and no horn. The saddle bronc rider grips a simple rein braided from cotton or polyester and attached to a leather halter worn by the horse. The rider lifts on the rein and attempts to find a rhythm with the animal by spurring forwards and backwards with his feet.
  • Tiedown Roping - a calf is roped around the neck by a lariat, the horse stops and sets back on the rope while the cowboy dismounts, runs to the calf, throws it to the ground and ties three feet together.
  • Bull Riding - the most popular and dangerous event, the cowboys ride full-grown bulls instead of horses. Although skills and equipment similar to those needed for bareback bronc riding are required, the event differs considerably from horse riding competition due to the danger involved.

World’s Toughest Rodeo 2008 - Who is the Toughest Cowboy?

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008
Tickets Available at TICKETFINDER.com™
World’s Toughest Rodeo is exactly what the name suggests - an annual attempt to find the cowboy who has guts, strength, presence of mind and precision. If last year’s competition had you biting your nails, the 2008 World’s Toughest Rodeo will definitely have you sweating and your pulse racing. Twelve Toughest Cowboy contenders paired into match-ups, each competing in all three rough-stock disciplines - bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding. You don’t see this everyday. This is the iron man competition of rodeo that tests endurance, ability and strength of will!

World’s Toughest Rodeo has always had the brawn and stamina. Now they’re adding the beauty and speed! The ladies barrel racing is returning to the rodeo as an added feature. During the 2008 World’s Toughest Rodeo, you will get to watch the women in a race against the clock to take home the prize money.

At the end of the 2008 World’s Toughest Rodeo, one cowboy will walk away with the Toughest Cowboy title and a deed to the Jager Ranch in Colorado.

World’s Toughest Cowboy implements a simple format - 12 Cowboys, 3 Rides, 1 Champion. Each cowboy gets on three animals (Bareback horse, Saddle Bronc horse and a Bull) and competes head-to-head with another cowboy for wins in each of the three rides. The cowboy with the highest score in each ride gets a win and the cowboy with the most aggregate points for all three rounds earns an extra win.

Unlike traditional rodeo, World’s Toughest Cowboy never disqualifies a rider. Instead riders are penalized points if they’re bucked off or touch the animal. One point is subtracted from their total score for each tenth of a second that they are not able to complete of their eight-second ride.

Events’ schedule

  • World’s Toughest Rodeo - January 19, 2008 at Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro (tickets)
  • World’s Toughest Rodeo - January 26, 2008 at Wachovia Spectrum, Philadelphia (tickets)
