The Rugby World Cup 2007 - It’s All About Grit and Audacity

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Some frown upon Rugby as a sport and the reason for this is its rough play nature. Some enjoy Rugby and think it is an outstanding sport and the reason for this is the same - its rough play nature. Different view points do not change one fact - Rugby is one of the most watched sports in the U.S. Gutsy play, grit, strict rules and screaming fans - this sums up a Rugby game.

Latest treat for Rugby lovers is the ongoing Rugby World Cup 2007 which began on September 7th and will continue till October 20th 2007.

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international Rugby union competition. The event is organized by the sport’s governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB) and is contested by the men’s national teams. The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup, named after the Rugby School pupil credited with the game’s invention. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world.

The first ever Rugby World Cup tournament was played in May and June 1987 between 16 nations. It was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand’s All Blacks became the 1st Rugby World Champions when they beat France 29-9. Although the Rugby World Cup cannot boast of a long history, it certainly scores over many much older sports in popularity and ratings.

When it comes to media coverage, only the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics are paramount to the Rugby World Cup. In 2003, the event was broadcast in 205 countries and the figure is expected to rise significantly in 2007.

England is the reigning Rugby World Champion after winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Rugby World Cup 2007

The 2007 Rugby World Cup is the sixth Rugby World Cup. 20 nations are competing for the Webb Ellis Cup and the tournament is being hosted by France. It started on September 7th and will end on October 20th. 8 quarter-finalists from the 2003 Rugby World Cup were granted automatic qualification, while 12 other nations gained entry through the regional qualifying competitions that began in 2004. Portugal is the debutante nation at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

According to a recent survey, the world’s favorites are the All Blacks who are expected to give a strong performance. The first match, held on Friday, September 7th, was a disappointment for the host nation as they were beaten by Argentina.

What will be the future of the French team? Will England be able to recreate the 2003 victory? Will the debutantes be promising? Well, there is only one way to find out - watch the matches, and nothing is as thrilling as watching them in person.
