Wicked Broadway Musical lead actress Donna Vivino feels proud to be the wicked witch!
Prior to every ‘Wicked’ performance, Donna switches over to her second identity on stage with pleasure. She adapts herself to the persona of the Wicked Elphaba fully.
Wicked Musical star Vivino dons the role and Elphaba is brought to life wherein the essence remains authentic. Apparently this zeal in the actors is what makes Wicked Broadway Musical a blockbuster hit and an all time favorite.
Why Donna Vivino loves being Elphaba?
For Vivino, Elphaba is a character which is intense and astounding. According to this Wicked Broadway star, Elphaba clicks owing to her distinct traits and barefaced character. Even though Elphaba is green, she refuses to play a victim and continue to do good as much as she can. Donna Vivino appeared to have enough reasons to admire the role she plays.
Besides these grounds, this Wicked lead actor relishes to be a part of the milestone also because of the incredible sound tracks and the storyline. She loves the fact that women play the substantial roles in the Wicked Musical.
Well, loving your craft is certainly the key to contentment and possibly the key to historical performances too! Wicked witches are back. Buy your Wicked tickets now!

When it is about creating phenomenal themes, instincts rule!
Stephen Schwartz adhered to the same instinct when he first heard about Wicked, the novel (The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West). His resolution to write a stage musical based on the book was spontaneous. However, prior to laying a concrete foundation and inaugurating Wicked the Musical, Stephen Schwartz had to convince the writer of the novel Gregory Maguire, that a stage musical would be a masterstroke and a sensation.
Wicked Broadway Musical- A rise to fame
The innovative concept managed to persuade Gregory Maguire and he released the rights for stage. During the course of developing the Wicked Play, Stephen Schwartz came up with authentic ideas for expanding Gregory’s conception. In the interim, Stephen also thought-out on how to make multiple story lines work on stage.
Eventually a team was formed with Marc Platt as the lead producer, Joe Mantello as the director and Winnie Holzman- writer of Wicked Book. The primary effort was to spin out an original stage piece. Wicked the Musical’s script and score was developed, scrutinized and revised at regular intervals.
San Francisco witnessed the dawn of the Pre-Broadway trial. The first preview of Wicked Show made the audience cry, laugh and cheer. Wicked proved out to be a marvel of all times and instantly achieved a hit status. It became a grapevine among the thrilled audiences and critics. Broadway could not evade praise for long and declared it a success too.
Wicked Musical season is here yet again. Authentic Wicked Tickets to all venues are available at TICKETFINDER.com™. Buy your Wicked Musical tickets now!

The musical ended its pre-Broadway tryout in Denver, Colorado in September 2007, with Broadway previews beginning in November 2007 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, recently the home of Disney Theatrical’s Beauty and the Beast, which closed in July 2007 to make way for the new production.

Synopsis
Ariel, a beautiful and adventurous little mermaid, leaves her undersea realm for a sixteenth birthday excursion to the surface. She hopes to find the prince of her dreams, whose statue she had found. Accompanied by her friend, Sebastian, she begins their quest. But a jealous Sea-Witch, Ursula, threatens Ariel. In fact, everywhere in the sea, the witch’s nasty shark cohorts, Flotsam and Jetsam, terrorize all. Ursula magically conjures up a storm which sinks a ship carrying the prince, Prince Eric. Ariel dives into the waves to save him, but not before she has been tricked into trading her voice to the witch.
As he recovers from his ordeal, Eric believes Georgina, who discovered him on the rocks, saved him. He declares to all that she will be his wife - a fitting ‘thank you’ for saving his life. Meanwhile, the prince has befriended the voiceless Ariel while Georgina, her heart belonging to another, resists the impending marriage. Patience, love and friendship solve this delightful romantic puzzle. Ursula is punished and Ariel and the Prince are happily wed, once again proving that love conquers all.

A Chorus Line has been one of the longest running shows on Broadway. With the kind of acclaim it received, it is not surprising to see that the musical is again in the run for becoming a long running revival. If you haven’t seen this show, you are definitely missing something. Find a good online broker and get your A Chorus Line tickets today!
A Chorus Line is a highly acclaimed 1975 musical, originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Michael Bennett. The original Broadway production was an unprecedented box office and critical hit, receiving 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Synopsis of A Chorus Line
In an empty theater, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. For 17 dancers, this audition is the one opportunity to do what they have always dreamed of. Not to be the star, but to get the job, to have the chance to dance and come through.
As the show progresses, the audience get to know all about the characters - their hopes, dreams, fears, past and present. Many abrupt twists and turns make A Chorus Line a musical full of surprises. When the show within A Chorus Line ultimately is staged, the hodgepodge rehearsal clothes of the 19 characters have been replaced by identical spangled gold costumes. As each dancer joins the group, it is suddenly difficult to distinguish one from the other. Ironically, each character who was an individual to the audience is now an anonymous member of an ensemble.
This is the story of A Chorus Line in a nut-shell, a story of young and enthusiastic dancers who want to prove their worth to the world and to themselves.
Some A Chorus Line Trivia
- The musical was derived from several taped workshop sessions with Broadway dancers, known as ‘gypsies’, including eight who eventually appeared in the original cast.
- A Chorus Line opened off-Broadway at The Public Theater on May 21, 1975.
- Since its inception, the show’s many worldwide productions, both professional and amateur, have been a major source of income for The Public Theater.
- It has been reported that James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo are in post-production of a documentary about the musical called Every Little Step: The Journey of A Chorus Line.

Wicked is a slightly Gothic yet classy musical. With all the acclaim it has received since its opening, it is one of Broadway’s most popular production. A must watch for all theater lovers, Wicked is one interesting story, and the musical scores are pretty great too!
‘Wicked’ is a fable which is loosely based on ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’, a novel by Gregory Maguire. Also, the musical is a re-imagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic story, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ from the point of view of the witches of Oz. It explores the concept that Elphaba was actually a victim. Her behavior was merely a reaction against a charlatan wizard’s corrupt government.
At the core of ‘Wicked’ lies a truly heartfelt story of friendship and love. The tale of the improbable friendship of Elphaba and Glinda, their conflicts and their eventual falling out unfolds with humor, great music and an unconventional twist on an American standard.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, ‘Wicked’ has won 15 major awards including laurels for the Best Musical. In addition to an incredible musical score, the play has smartly crafted sets which are breathtakingly beautiful.
Since its first official opening on October 30th, 2003 at the George Gershwin Theater, ‘Wicked‘ has been running to packed houses. For all those who have not yet watched ‘The Wizard of Oz’, but plan to, ‘Wicked’ is a must see.
Some Wicked trivia
- The score of Wicked is heavily thematic, bearing in some senses more resemblance to a film score than a musical’s score.
- A cast recording of the original Broadway production was released on December 16, 2003, by Universal Music.
- Wicked has broken box office records around the world, holding weekly-gross-takings records in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London.
- The original production of Wicked stared Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Joel Grey as the Wizard.
- The show was nominated for ten 2004 Tony Awards, winning those for Best Actress, Scenic Design and Costume Design. It also won six Drama Desk Awards.
Wicked tickets currently enjoy the distinction of being one of the toughest to nail. But online portals like TICKETFINDER.com™ make it easy for fans to order them. You can order Wicked tickets from the convenience of your home and they will be delivered right at your doorstep.

There are hit musicals, and then there are evergreen musicals which hold their position as one of the top musicals almost forever. One such musical is Monty Python Spamalot. From the Knights Who Say “Ni” to blood thirsty rabbits with big pointy teeth, Monty Python’s Flying Circus established a new standard for television absurdity in the 1960s and ’70s. The troupe’s film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ inspired an undying devotion - fans can quote it word-for-word.
Monty Python Spamalot is a comic musical ‘lovingly ripped off’ from the 1975 film. It is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend but differs from the movie in some ways giving it a more Broadway feel.
Divided into 2 Acts, Monty Python Spamalot traces the journey of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they try and protect the Holy Grail. The musical officially opened on March 17, 2005 at New York’s Shubert Theater. The production has long been both a financial and critical success. Broadway musical fans appreciate its visual and auditory references to other musicals and musical theater in general.
Reactions by Monty Python members
Monty Python Spamalot has had mixed reactions from former Monty Python members. Terry Gilliam describes it as “Python-like” and John Cleese, who is the recorded voice of God in the musical also has liked it. Michael Palin, although, feels that it doesn’t hold up to Python’s style.
Awards
The original Broadway production of the musical received 14 Tony Award nominations, more than any other show in the 2004-05 season. It won three of them:
- Best Musical
- Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Sara Ramirez)
- Best Direction of a Musical (Mike Nichols)
Everyone has seen the film, and loved it. Now is the time to see and love the musical. For Monty Python Spamalot tickets, trust a reliable online ticketing source like TICKETFINDER.com™. You will be able to order tickets from the comfort of your home and they will be delivered right at your doorstep. After the super success of Billy Elliot, the film, a musical adaptation hit the theaters in 2005. Although not many expected it, Billy Elliot, the musical has become even more popular than the movie. Playing to sold out audiences all over, the musical has revolutionized the current theatrical scene and effectively raised the bar for all its contemporaries.
Billy Elliot is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed theatrical productions of the contemporary times. With a book and lyrics by Lee Hall, who wrote the film’s screenplay and music by Sir Elton John, Billy Elliot premiered at the Victoria Palace in London in March 2005. It is still showing there.
Billy Elliot opened at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on 13th November 2007 and will come to Broadway at the Imperial Theater in September 2008. Productions have been proposed for U.S.A., Canada, Japan and Germany as well.
Synopsis
Billy Elliot is set in County Durham, against the backdrop of the 1984-85 coal miners’ strike. 11 year old Billy, son of a hard-working miner, has lost his mother. His father dreams of him becoming a boxer someday, a dream that Billy fears as much as his father cherishes. One day, on the way to a boxing lesson, he stumbles upon a ballet class and realizes he wants to dance. He trades his boxing gloves for ballet shoes and joins Mrs. Wilkinson’s class. Billy continues to come to the dance class, and Mrs. Wilkinson, recognizing his talent, encourages him to audition for the Royal Ballet School in London.
As Billy dwindles between what he wants and what is expected of him, his father and brother, who are constantly engaged in a battle with policemen in riot gear protecting strike breakers, try to involve Billy in their world. Finally, Billy’s father comes to terms with his son’s desire to be a dancer and makes his peace with it.
Sub - plots emerge in the musical as a result of the actions of minor characters such as Billy’s friend Michael with homosexual feelings, Mrs. Wilkinson’s daughter Debbie and Mrs. Wilkinson herself.
Billy Elliot – the film
The inspiration for Billy Elliot, the musical, a hit film of the same name was released in 2000. Written by Lee Hall and directed by Stephen Daldry, the movie was an instant success and became one of the most critically acclaimed films of that year almost immediately upon its release.

When you look around and count the top stand-up comedians, Jeff Dunham’s name is sure to be at the top of the list. Mixing the difficult art of ventriloquism with an even more difficult one of stand-up comedy, Dunham has been making audiences laugh uncontrollably for a very long time now. The master is bringing his expertise back on stage and fans just have to be there. Don’t worry, all your favorite friends (Peanut, Jose Jalapeno on a Stick, Walter ‘n all) will be there as well!
Jeff is a graduate from Baylor University and has performed on numerous comedy shows, including Comedy Central Presents in 2003. His usual puppets include a woozle named Peanut, a bitter old man named Walter, Jose Jalapeno, a talking jalapeno pepper on a stick, Achmed the Dead Terrorist and an unusual superhero named Melvin.
His first DVD, Jeff Dunham: Arguing With Myself, was released in April 2006. In this stand-up offering, Jeff opens his show playing straight-man to his usual crew and includes two other characters: Sweet Daddy D and Bubba J, in place of Achmed and Melvin. His comedy special “Jeff Dunham: Spark of Insanity” was available at Redbox stands on 4 September, 2007, and was released to buy on DVD on 18 September, 2007.
Both Arguing With Myself and Spark of Insanity are available to view instantly on Netflix and he had a third Comedy Central Special being taped in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 7, 2008, which will be released during the holiday season.
Dunham’s Puppets
- Peanut
a Woozle with a small tuft of green hair on his head and only one shoe. Peanut was made in Salem, Virginia. Unlike most of Jeff Dunham’s puppets, Peanut’s eyes and eyebrows are immobile. This allows for a greater range of motion for his head. He is the most active puppet.
Walter
a retired and grumpy old man with arms always crossed in discontent. Married for 48 years (as of 2008), he has a brash, negative, and often sarcastic view on today’s world. He is a Vietnam War veteran and a former welder and “doesn’t give a damn” about anyone, especially his own wife and certain audience members.
- Jose Jalapeno on a Stick
Jose is a jalapeno pepper with a Mexican personality, a sombrero and a mustache, whose running joke is adding “… on a stick” to the end of most of his sentences. José’s movement is restricted to one single motion of the mouth. Penut and Jose are continually arguing.
- Bubba J.
loves beer and NASCAR. The “J.” is short for his last name: Junior. Bubba is married, and is assumed to have at least one child.
- Sweet Daddy D
an African American who is referenced as Jeff’s new agent. He hates NASCAR and loves women. Sweet Daddy also likes to remind to Jeff that Black is better than White.
- Achmed, the Dead Terrorist
a wisecracking skeleton of a suicide bomber, with a beard and a white turban.
- Melvin, the Superhero Guy
has only two real powers, flight and X-ray vision, although he can’t see through silicone, and can only fly as far as Jeff can throw him. He claims he would be more of a superhero if it weren’t for his large nose and small stature.

Legally Blonde has been successfully playing in theaters everywhere and has been a hit ever since it first came to the spotlight. Legally Blonde, the musical, based on Amanda Brown’s novel and the 2001 film of same name, has been given music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin.
Legally Blonde had its pre-Broadway tryout at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco beginning in previews on January 23, 2007 and playing its final performance in San Fransisco on February 24, 2007. After some changes to the score and minor adjustments to the book, the show opened for previews on April 3, 2007. The Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, opened on April 29, 2007 at the Palace Theater to mostly positive reviews.
The musical, divided into 2 Acts, manages to capture the essence of the critically acclaimed movie effectively, accentuated by the situational songs. Fans of the original movie can probably already predict which moments become songs — and if they bet on the bend and snap, they gambled right - there’s actually a song called ‘Bend and Snap’. All characters get their very own songs, yes even Paulette (Elle’s beautician friend).
As of now, MTV is searching for a new Elle Woods in a reality show entitled ‘Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods’ to replace Laura Bell Bundy in the Musical. The show debuted on June 2.

When the musical opens, the screaming, ultra-glamorous girls of sorority Delta Nu are celebrating the imminent engagement of Warner Huntington the Third, to their blonde sorority president, Elle Woods. It is only after Elle comes back from her dinner date with Warner that they all realize that she has been dumped because she isn’t ’serious’ enough to be the wife of someone who might be a Senator some day. Elle decides to graduate from Harvard Law School in order to prove to Warner and others that she can be serious. To everyone’s surprise, she gets into Harvard and even manages to stick to school despite being declared a misfit (and coming face-to-face with Warner’s mean fiancée – Vivian).
All tables are turned when Elle, using her wit (and vast knowledge of skin and hair care) manages to win a murder case single handedly and save fitness mogul Brooke Wyndham. Somewhere along the way Elle realizes that Warner is selfish and undeserving of love. She dumps him and goes on to live a life full of success and love (she accepts her long time friend Emmett’s proposal).

Gypsy has been one of Broadway’s most popular musicals. A heart warming tale, it is one of the very few theater productions that has been able to pull crowds every time it plays. Gypsy is a 1959 musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. It is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist and focuses on her mother, Mama Rose. Gypsy is frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of the mid-20th century’s conventional musical theater art form, often called the ‘book musical’.
Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers. The original Broadway production opened on May 21, 1959, at The Broadway Theatre, moved to the Imperial Theatre and ran for 702 performances after 2 previews. Gypsy saw its most recent revival in 2007 at the Encores! City Center, New York. It has been revived on Broadway as of March 2008.
Synopsis
Set during the Great Depression, Gypsy is about a dominating stage mother, Rose, who travels the country with her two daughters, June and Louise and their manager, Herbie. They play the vaudeville circuit around the United States. While June and Louise wish their mother would settle down and marry Herbie, Rose continues to pursue dreams of stardom for her girls. When June deserts the act, Rose turns her attention to the shy Louise, whom she hopes to fashion into a star. When the act is booked into a burlesque house by mistake, Louise is forced into the spotlight and Gypsy Rose Lee is born.
In the months that follow, Louise becomes secure, always following her mother’s advices. Ultimately, she becomes a major burlesque star and does not need her mother any longer. Herbie and June are both gone, and Rose, sad and feeling useless, fantasizes about her own lit up runway and cheering audience, something that will never happen. Reconciliation between the family marks the end of Gypsy.
Gypsy Awards
Gypsy has been honored with the following Awards:
- Tony Awards for Leading Actress and Best Revival
- Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Featured Actress, Outstanding Director and Outstanding Revival
- Theatre World Awards for Best Actress and Best Featured Actress

Cry-Baby has been a sensation since it first came to light and every time it comes to stage, the show’s popularity rises even more. Deriving its central idea from Grease, Cry-Baby has given the all time favorite musical a make-over and made it even more admirable than before.
Cry-Baby is a musical based on the 1990 John Waters movie of the same name. The music is written by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger and the book is by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. The show premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego on November 18, 2007 and ran through December 16. A Broadway production of Cry-Baby will began previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 15, 2008, with an opening on April 24.
Directed by Mark Brokaw with choreography by Rob Ashford, Cry-Baby is the second of Waters’ films to be adapted for the stage as a musical comedy, the first being Hairspray.
Synopsis
Treading the lines of Grease, Cry-Baby details the story of Wade Walker, Baltimore’s resident greaser/Drape, and his gang. Walker is the Cry-Baby and his group consists of disfigured Hatchet-Face Malnorowski, pregnant sister Pepper, Hatchet’s boyfriend Milton Hackett and sexually-active Wanda Woodward. They are feared by all Baltimore residents. One day after school, after getting an intense polio vaccine, Cry-Baby falls in love with Allison Vernon-Williams, a pretty but simple/Square girl, equally in love with him. Allison’s grandmother and boyfriend Baldwin are disgusted by this and try to keep them away.
How Wade and Allison manage to bring the Drapes and Squares together forms the plot of Cry-Baby.
Cry-Baby, the film
Cry-Baby was released in April 1990 and was essentially a parody teen musicals such as Grease, of Elvis Presley movies and of 1950s ‘juvenile delinquent’ movies. Johnny Depp played the lead, a 1950s teen rebel Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker.
Cry-Baby did not achieve high audience numbers in its initial release but has subsequently become a cult movie.

According to Penn and Teller’s home page, they call themselves “a couple of eccentric guys who have learned how to do a few cool things”. The dynamic duo first joined hands in 1975 and have since developed into show business’s leading acts. Their shows are one of the most demanded and watched performances in the theater industry, although Penn and Teller have also been making successful appearances on television.
Since their first gig together, the artists have combined Teller’s silent, occasionally creepy, magic with Penn’s clown college education and juggling expertise, the two have created an entertainment success story that went from the streets to small clubs to national theater tours, and now to a current, multi-year engagement at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Penn and Teller are Las Vegas headliners whose act is an amalgam of illusion and comedy. Penn Jillette is a raconteur and Teller generally uses mime while performing, although his voice can occasionally be heard throughout their performance. They specialize in gory tricks, exposing quacks and frauds, performing clever pranks and have become associated with Las Vegas, atheism, scientific skepticism and libertarianism.
Some Penn and Teller trivia
- Penn and Teller have written three best-selling books - ‘Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends’, ‘How to Play with Your Food’ and ‘How to Play in Traffic’.
- Although the duo performs numerous well-known tricks, the most loved is their signature ‘flag restoration’ trick. They make a U.S. flag seem to disappear by wrapping it in a copy of the United States Bill of Rights, and apparently setting the flag on fire, so that “the flag is gone but the Bill of Rights remains”. In the end, the flag comes out unscratched.
- Movie appearances by Penn and Teller include ‘Penn & Teller’s Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends’, ‘Penn & Teller’s Invisible Thread for Showtime’ and ‘Michael Moore Hates America’.
- In September, Penn and Teller will celebrate their fifth year as headliners in their own theater at the Rio All-suite Hotel & Casino.

After ‘Frankenstein’ was published, Mary Shelley was declared the undisputed queen of the Gothic writing world. It was uncommon for women to write in those days, and Gothic was a genre ruled by men. When ‘Frankenstein’ came along, it changed the whole meaning of Gothic as it mixed together horror, mystery and Gothic.
Mary Shelley’s scary tale has now been given a funny twist and the result is http://www.ticketfinder.com/young_frankenstein_tickets.html, a musical bringing together the genres of Gothic, horror, mystery and comedy.
http://www.ticketfinder.com/young_frankenstein_tickets.html is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its 1939 sequel, Son of Frankenstein.
After tryouts in Seattle, Washington and four weeks of previews, Young Frankenstein opened on Broadway on November 8, 2007 to mostly positive reviews.
Synopsis
Young Frankenstein is the re-imagining of the Mary Shelley’s classic from the comic genius of Mel Brooks. When Frederick Frankenstein, an esteemed New York brain surgeon and professor, inherits a castle and laboratory in Transylvania from his grandfather, deranged genius Victor van Frankenstein, he faces a dilemma -should he continue to run from his family’s tortured past or should he stay in Transylvania to carry on his grandfather’s mad experiments reanimating the dead and, in the process, fall in love with his sexy lab assistant, Inga? A Series of exciting and comic events follow as the story is told in the typical Brooks fashion.
Young Frankenstein’s plot is largely carried over from the movie, but some scenes are expanded to musical numbers, and many gags have been added or updated. Some scenes such as the encounter with the little girl have been left out, and the ending is quite different.
Main characters
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein
The Monster
Igor
Inga
Elizabeth Benning
Frau Blucher
Inspector Hans Kemp, The Hermit

The subject of spelling bees has become popular in written fiction, particularly since the release of the amazingly popular documentary film Spellbound in the year 2002, and now it is the theme of one of the most popular musicals the world has witnessed recently - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The show features adult actors playing junior high school students participating in a spelling contest. While the subject matter seems a bit strange for a Broadway show, you will be totally surprised by how well they combine the musical elements with the thrill of the competition!
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee a one act musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The show centers around a fictional spelling bee set in the Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups. By the end of the musical, the spellers learn that winning is not everything.
An unusual aspect of the show is that three or four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton competed.
Based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play created by Rebecca Feldman, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was work-shopped and developed at the Barrington Stage Company in the Massachusetts Berkshires in February 2004 and then given a fuller production in July 2004. The musical moved Off-Broadway to the Second Stage Theatre on January 11, 2005, where it enjoyed critical and box-office success.
Some The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee trivia
- Spelling Bee, together with The Drowsy Chaperone and Xanadu, is part of a Broadway trend to present musicals uninterrupted by an intermission, with a relatively small cast and short running time of less than two hours.
- In 2007, the first translated production opened in Seoul, South Korea, with all of the music and dialogue in Korean, but the words that were spelled were in English.
- Julie Andrews, who played Mary Poppins in the film version of the show, missed ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ when she was a guest speller on ‘KIDS night on Broadway, 2007′.
- The original Broadway cast recording was nominated for a Grammy Award.
Characters
- Rona Lisa Peretti - The #1 Realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champ and returning moderator
- Vice Principal Douglas Panch - After five years’ absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge
- Mitch Mahoney - The Official Comfort Counselor
- Olive Ostrovsky - A young newcomer to competitive spelling
- William Barfe - A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year
- Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre - Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller
- Marcy Park - A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed 9th in last year’s nationals
- Leaf Coneybear - The second runner-up in his district
- Chip Tolentino - A boy scout and champion of the 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
- Three or four spellers from the audience - Audience members are encouraged to sign up to participate before the show
