It sets a representative of the Southeastern Conference against an opponent from the Big 10 Conference. The Capital One Bowl has been played at the 51,000 seat Citrus Bowl since its inception with one exception when stadium seating was expanded in the mid 1970s. History of the Capital One Bowl

 

The Capital One Bowl (get Capital One Bowl tickets) is one of the oldest of the non-BCS bowls, next to the Cotton Bowl and Sun Bowl, beginning play in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl. The first game attracted an estimated crowd of 9,000. By 1952, the game was dubbed the 'Little Bowl with the Big Heart', because all the proceeds from the game went to charity. Before 1968, the game featured match-ups between schools throughout the South. From 1968 through 1975 the bowl featured the Mid-American Conference champion against an opponent from the Southern Conference, the SEC or an at-large opponent.

 

After going through a number of changes, the Capital One Bowl (get Capital One Bowl tickets) adopted its present form in 1998. The 1998 game, which featured nearby Florida beating Penn State, holds the game's attendance record at 72,940.
