Cyrano De Bergerac, the musical is based on Edmond Rostand's classic 1897 play
of the same name. The musical details the story of the large-nosed poetic Cyrano
de Bergerac, his beautiful cousin Roxane and his classically handsome but
inarticulate friend Christian de Neuvillette who, unaware of Cyrano's unrequited
passion for Roxane, imposes upon him to provide the romantic words he can use to
woo her successfully. The tale is set in mid-17th century Paris. Its style is
closer to that of the pop operas Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera
than a traditional Broadway book musical.
Cyrano De Bergerac features Kevin Kline (Cyrano), Jennifer Garner (Roxane) and
Daniel Sunjata (Christian) in the leads, the set is designed by Tom Pye and
costumes are by Gregory Gale.
The original production of Cyrano de Bergerac opened in Paris 1897 starring
Benoit-Constant Coquelin, who performed the role over 400 times. A translated
production opened on Broadway at The Garden Theatre in 1899. The longest-running
Broadway production starred Walter Hampden in 1923. Jose Ferrer won a Tony Award
for his performance in a 1946 Broadway staging. The play was last seen on
Broadway in 1984 starring Derek Jacobi; Frank Langella starred in a shortened
off-Broadway production in 1997.
