The Pro Bowl is the all-star game of the National Football League (NFL). It is played at the end of the Super Bowl, the league's championship game. It has been played at the Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii since January 1980. The pleasure of the game lies in the fact that it stresses more on fun and much less on competition.

NFL Pro Bowl - History

The world saw the appearance of the first Pro Bowl game at the end of the 1938 season. On January 15, 1939, the New York Giants won the first "Pro All-Star Game" (as it was called then). This format of playing the game continued for 4 years. The team consisted solely of NFL players. The last "Pro All-Star Game" was held in December 1942 after which it was discontinued due to the war. The NFL revived the game in January 1951 after the 1950 season with a few modifications.

After the 1970 merger of the AFL and NFL, the game's name was changed to 'AFC-NFC Pro Bowl'. It gradually became the NFL Pro Bowl as we know it today.

Pro Bowl player selection process

Prior to 1995, only the players and the coaches selected the team players for the Pro Bowl. Currently, there is more participation from the fans' side as they are allowed to vote for their favorite player. Each group's ballots count for one third of the votes. The fans vote online at the NFL's official site. There are also replacements that go to the game should any selected player cannot play due to injuries.

The Pro Bowl MVP award

The Most Valuable Player award is given to the outstanding performer of the Pro Bowl. It was presented for the first time in 1951. From 1957 to 1972, two awards were presented to an offensive back and a defensive lineman. Since 1973, only one MVP award has been presented. At times, though, the award has been shared by multiple players.

The Pro Bowl attitude

The main attraction of the Pro Bowl games are their attitude. Without competition on their minds, the teams play with a friendly approach. As the Pro Bowl results have no effect upon a player's or team's statistics and records, the focus is on playing rather than competing. The players and coached call it “a fun game” and the audience enjoy it to the maximum.
