The Pro Baseball Home Run Derby (get Pro Baseball Home Run Derby tickets) is an event played one day prior to the Pro Baseball All-Star Game. It is a contest among the top home run hitters in the league to determine who can hit the most home runs. The event is currently sponsored by State Farm Insurance. Former sponsors included Century 21 Real Estate and Service Merchandise.

In essence, the Pro Baseball Home Run Derby (get Pro Baseball Home Run Derby tickets) is a display of a player's best baseball skills. 8 players, 3 rounds - the winner takes it all. It is 2 hours of anticipation and nail-biting excitement. The game's biggest sluggers crank out ball-after-ball into the stands until one true star stands alone as the Home-Run Champion.

An Overview of the Pro Baseball Home Run Derby

In 1985, Pro Baseball adopted an official format for a Pro Baseball Home Run Derby (get Pro Baseball Home Run Derby tickets) prior to the All-Star Game. This was the first time it was officially acknowledged by the League. From 1985 to 1990, the Home Run Derby was set up as a 2 inning event with each participant getting 5 outs per inning. Since 1991, 8 to 10 players are chosen to participate in a three round contest to determine the Home Run Derby Champion.

Each player receives 10 outs per round as he attempts to hit as many home runs as he can. The top four, regardless of their league affiliation, advance to the second round. If a tie exists among players for advancement into Round 2, the player with the most regular season home runs at the All Star break advances. The second tie breaker, if necessary, is distance of longest home run in Round One.

Pro Baseball Home Run Derby participants

8 baseball players participate in the Pro Baseball Home Run Derby (get Pro Baseball Home Run Derby tickets) - 4 top All-Star team members in home run standings for American League and 4 top All-Star team members in home run standings for National League. Major League Baseball makes a $1,000 donation in each player's name to the charity of the player's choice in appreciation for his participation.

'm glad Orioles closer George Sherrill is an All-Star. I think he's deserving. I hope, when he found out, that he called his family and swelled with pride.
