The most popular form of America's national pastime remains Major League Baseball (MLB). However, due to the widespread popularity, there are a huge number of teams that cannot be accommodated into the top flight of baseball. Hence, the need for organizing a minor league arose. This is better known as Minor League Baseball. The MiLB is further subdivided based on a number of criteria. It is made up of a number of leagues, and each league is called Minor League Baseball.
Organization and structure of Minor League Baseball
MiLB are made up of teams that are independently owned and operated. The main purpose of this system is to be able to provide high quality players to the major league upon demand. While doing this, it also promotes the sport and satisfies the ever growing demand of baseball in the country. Major league teams have 40 players on their roster. However, during the season they are only allowed to have 25 players in the playing squad. Thus, the remaining 15 players regularly play in the Minor Leagues to stay fit and glued into the game, rather than sitting around on the bench. Each Major League team normally has agreements with at least one AAA (Highest), AA and two A level teams. Thus the 15 players from the Major League team play in these leagues to prove their worthiness.
The AAA Baseball league
The AAA MiLB is the highest level in the Minor League Baseball system. Teams are normally from the large metropolitan areas which do not have any MLB franchises. These include Buffalo ( Buffalo Bison's), Las Vegas ( Las Vegas Area 51s), Nashville and Virginia among others. These teams are often referred to as "parking lot teams" because many major-league quality players are held in reserve at the minor league level for major league emergencies. Still, some of the top prospects might be assigned here if they are not quite ready for the major leagues, with a view towards being called up later.
The most popular AAA league is the International League. It operates in the eastern United States. The current champions are the Toledo Mud Hens.
