Boxing - The origins of the sport
Boxing's origins can be traced back to around 3000 B.C. as shown in various wall paintings and scriptures. In the modern world, boxing as we know it today, started sometime around 1743. This is the time when the London prize rules were framed and led to the boxing being called 'prizefighting'. There are two types of boxing contests Ð Amateur and Professional. The basic rules for boxing are non-usage of legs, prohibition of hitting below the belt, holding, tripping, pushing, biting, spitting and wresting. The match is said to be over when any one of the contestants gets 'knocked out' or suffers an injury beyond which he cannot participate.
Boxing as we know it today
There are many boxing governing bodies in the world. Most notable of these are the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO). The most famous however is the World Boxing Council (WBC) which sanctions the various World titles across different weight categories.
Apart from boxing events, there are a variety of new tournaments that take place each year where the combatants are allowed to use both their arms and legs for attacking. Out of these martial arts based boxing tournaments, the one that has risen to popularity is the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Two contestants face off in an octagonal ring to emerge victorious as the ultimate fighter.
Boxing has produced many legends due to its violent nature. The best known of them all perhaps, is the great Muhammad Ali. Modern day heroes include Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. The fact that boxing is as popular as ever can be judged from the fact that the recent fight between De La Hoya and Mayweather generated close to $125 million!
