NFL Football - See Tickets

The National Football League (NFL) is as big as any sports league gets. Boasting of the highest per-game attendance of any professional sports league in the world, American football has surely come a long way. American football is a direct descendant of rugby, a sport that was brought to the United States from Canada. This happened when Harvard students played an invitational match at McGill University. Although initially the sport was played only at elite institutions, it soon caught the fancy of people and slowly developed into one of the most closely followed sports in the world.

History of the American 'Institution'

Founded in 1920, the NFL was known as the American Professional Football Association for about two years. The league has evolved as the game has changed since the very beginning. The NFL consists of 32 teams. These are divided into the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each consists of 16 teams, which are further sub-divided into 8 divisions, 4 divisions per conference. These divisions are named geographically.

At the end of each season, six teams from each conference play in the NHL playoffs. The yearly winner is determined at the Super Bowl, termed as the biggest sporting moment of the year. The hype and support surrounding the game is so high, that the Super Bowl is sometimes referred to as an unofficial holiday.

Recent times in the NFL

Recent years have seen a hike in media interest in NFL due to its increasing popularity. A measure of that can be taken from the fact that advertisers are willing to shell out $ 2.6 million for a 30 second advertising spot during the 2007 Super Bowl. This cost could be justified, keeping in mind that an estimated 90 million viewers witnessed the Super Bowl on their televisions across the country.
