Golf Tournaments and Tickets
Golf is often considered a leisure sport by many. Seen as a game for those who want to relax or retire, people forget the technicality and the finesse needed to play this game. Due to its expensive equipment, golf was played only by a select few in the beginning and acquired a status as the game of the rich people. Now however, its increasing popularity all over the world is testimonial to the fact that enthusiasts have broken out of this mold and taken to playing this sport seriously.
Golf - How it is played
Golf has it's origins in Scotland, dating way back to 1456. It was brought to the Americas by the British and since then golf in the United States has not looked back. With an estimated 35000 golf courses in the world today, more than 50% of them are located in the United States itself. Each country has its own golfing association. However, there might be different organizations that schedule tournaments. This is the case in the USA where the PGA (Professional Golfers' Association of America) organizes the world famous PGA tour every year, while the governing body is the United States Golf Association. Although, the PGA is based in the United States, professional golfers from all over the world can participate in its events.
The PGA tour is the most prized golfing 'league' in the world. With prizes in the millions of dollars, it lures the best talents.
Golf demystified
Golfing is a very expensive sport compared to others. It is one of the only games where it is advisable to not share any of your equipment with anybody. Hence, each person normally buys or rents their own set of clubs, which are expensive sporting goods. Apart from these, it is also one of the only sports where you need to pay to play, unlike other sports like soccer, rugby and tennis where you pay only to watch. However, despite these costly shortcomings, golfing has it's rewards. The playing areas are some of the most beautiful settings to play a game in and the rewards are tremendous. Advertisers cashed in on the golfing mania by splurging millions of dollars in advertising. Tiger Woods, the golfing legend, earned an estimated $87 million in 2005 alone!
The current golfing scene
The PGA tour is a year round tour, staging competitive golfing tournaments in venues all across the United States. Next to the Masters the US Open Golf is one of the biggest PGA tournaments in the USA. The USA Open Golf Tournament is held in June every year. In 2007 it was held at the prestigious Oakmont Country Club and for the first time in history, an Argentinean won the US Open. However, the action has anything but wound up, with the British Open scheduled to take place soon. The historic Ryder Cup, which pitches the best European and American golfers against each other, will next be held in 2008 in Kentucky, United States. An event to look out for in the beginning of 2008, is also the prestigious Masters Tournament, one of the most anticipated events for golfing fans.
The interesting thing to watch out for this year is the emergence of new leaders and golf talents, such as Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk and Angel Cabrera. They will pose a tough challenge for supremacy to the likes of Tiger Woods.
