People often use NASCAR as synonymous with the NEXTEL Cup Series. If you thought
car rallies are for young boys only, one look at the screaming fans and you will
definitely change your mind. The sport's popularity is growing by the second!
The Beginning of NASCAR
NASCAR was founded on 21st February 1948 by Bill France Sr. The first auto race
was held on 8th March 1936 on the Daytona Beach Road course. It was promoted by
a local racer, Sig Haugdhal. Although the event was popular, the racing was
marred by controversies and the city had to face huge financial losses. Bill
France, a local resident, realized that if motor racing as a sport was to grow,
an organized institution was needed. With this thought in mind, he started
working towards an organization which would hold things in place. Thus the dawn
of NASCAR.
NASCAR today
The onset of the modern era changed the structure of NASCAR significantly. It
became one of the most important organizing committees when it came to sports.
Today NASCAR continues to hold onto its position and fame. The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series is the highest level of professional competition. The attitude of the
drivers is also entirely different. Previously the drivers were mostly concerned
about winning individual races. Now, their standing in championship points has
become an important factor.
NASCAR races are an outstanding experience with the screaming fans, screeching
car wheels and colorful setups. The excitement and tension of those around you
is bound to catch on.
