In 2007, Palminteri decided to revive A Bronx Tale on Broadway. Previews began on October 4 and the show premiered on October 25. It was directed by Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks.
Synopsis of A Bronx Tale
Set in the The Bronx section of New York City in the 1960s, A Bronx Tale (get A Bronx Tale) details the story of Calogero Anello, his hard working father and his dilemma when has to make a choice between two very different worlds. He must decide if he wants to live by the philosophies of his working class family or join and explore the dark world of the Mafia and follow the local neighborhood mobster who takes him under his wing.
Calogero's father is a bus driver who tries to instill working-class family values in his son. As Calogero gets older, the aura and mystique of the Mafia and the charms of Sonny (the local mob boss), become difficult to resist. As Calogero comes of age, he must struggle with the choice of following his beloved father's values or submitting to the temptations of the life of organized crime.
As time passes, Sonny becomes more of a father figure for Calogero, thereby adding to his confusion and frustration.
A Bronx Tale – the film
Academy Award winning actor Robert De Niro attended a performance of A Bronx Tale (get A Bronx Tale) in New York and offered to buy the film rights to the show. Palminteri agreed on the condition that he be cast in the role of Sonny. The film version of A Bronx Tale premiered in 1993 and emerged as one of the most praised movies of the year.
The film version marked the directorial debut of De Niro and helped set-in-motion Palminteri's film career.
